Both are threatened by trawl fisheries bycatch, habitat destruction and collection for the international aquarium trade, curios, and for “traditional medicine.” Makax's pipefish (Syngnathus makaxi) is confined to shallow seagrass habitats off the Yucatán Peninsula in southeastern Mexico.
