Species nobody has seen for a very long time
2,120 species that have not been
recorded in years, in some cases in centuries, and that nobody has been able to
declare extinct. They are not gone. They are unaccounted for, which is a
different thing, and the difference is where the work is.
What "lost" means here
- Missing
- Unseen in the wild for more than 5 but fewer than 10 years, with no population
held in captivity or cultivation.
- Lost
- Not confirmed alive by photographic, audio or genetic evidence for more than
10 years. This is the threshold for everything on this page:

- Long lost
- Approximately 50 years unobserved. Most of this list,
… species, is in this category, and a further
… carry too little date information to be
placed in either.
Definitions from Long & Rodríguez 2022, Oryx 56(4),
"Lost but not forgotten", which is the vocabulary the underlying list uses. Note
what they turn on: evidence, not conservation status. A species
can be missing for a decade and still be assessed as fine:

“found again” rather than quietly vanishing.
Where they were last seen
Countries are shaded by how many lost species have their range recorded there,
darker for more. A circle marks a place that is not a country, an island like Luzon
or a region like Lake Victoria, and it sits at the country's center point rather
than at a locality. It is not a sighting, not a range map, and not a search area:
large countries accumulate large circles partly because they are large. Hover or
tap either for the breakdown.
What this map is not
The list is also uneven by design. It inherits the Re:wild / IUCN SSC lost
species list, which is far better resolved for vertebrates than for insects,
plants or molluscs. Reptiles, fish and amphibians make up more than half of it.
Reading the map as a picture of the world's lost biodiversity would mistake the
shape of the list for the shape of the problem.
Where we lose them is not where we find them
This site carries two maps: species that have gone missing, and species being
described for the first time. Set side by side they disagree, and the disagreement
is the argument. Brazil has lost the most and is still describing
plenty. China is describing more new species than anywhere on
earth and carries almost no backlog. The United States is the
reverse: a long list of losses and very few new descriptions.

The longest wait in each group
The groups are nothing like each other, though: a bird goes missing for a decade
and it is news, while a snail can go missing for a century before anyone notices it
has. These are the record holders, the species in each group whose last confirmed
record is the oldest of all.
What had to be thrown out to build this table
Taking simply the oldest date in each group produced a table we could not stand
behind. Ten of the first twenty-one entries were contradicted by
GBIF, the
global occurrence database, showing the animal turning up long after the date
this list gives as its last.
The fish was the worst of them. Astyanax scabripinnis, a
Brazilian tetra, sits in the source list with a last record of 1842.
GBIF holds 1,488 occurrences of it, the most recent from
2018. It is not a lost species. The same was true of
Cycloramphus fuliginosus, a frog with 152 records running to
2014, and of eight others.
Each group therefore shows its oldest candidate that GBIF does not
contradict, and all 23 rejections are recorded with their reasons. Two cautions had
to be built into that check. Evidence counts only where the scientific name matches
exactly. An apparent 7,537 records for one spider turned out to be a loose match to
a common European species. And an absence of recent records proves nothing
either: a Sierra Leone crab had none, and had still been found again. These
are errors in the lost-species list, not in the Red List, and they are why
this page treats its own inputs as claims to be checked rather than facts to be
republished.
Counting is not the same as rate
What that rate is, and is not
It is not a rate of loss. The numerator is a curated list rather
than a census, and the denominator is how many species each group's own taxonomic
authority currently recognizes. Effort is the confound, and it runs one way: birds
are the best-surveyed group on earth, so a low bird rate partly measures how hard
people have looked rather than how well birds are doing.
Only vertebrate groups appear, covering … of
the species on this page. The rest are invertebrates and plants, where the lost list
is far less complete and a rate would be comparing our ignorance with theirs. Frogs
and toads are shown together here because AmphibiaWeb publishes Anura as a single
figure, and a guessed split is worse than an honest merge.
Two words doing more work than they should
"Toad" is not a group. Everyday usage covers warty-skinned frogs
in at least six families, so the split here is the strict one: toads means
the true toads, family Bufonidae, and every other frog is filed as a frog. A
spadefoot toad will therefore appear under frogs, which is correct taxonomically
and wrong conversationally. "Fish" is the same kind of
convenience, covering three classes, kept together because that is the question
people ask.
Groups come from GBIF's backbone taxonomy, matched on the scientific name.
Why some species come back and others never do
Rediscovery is not random, and it is not simply a matter of looking harder.
Lindken and colleagues examined every lost tetrapod they could
trace and found that the species which come back share a profile: they tend to be
large, conspicuous mammals and birds, tolerant of a range of
habitats, living near people, in countries with money for fieldwork.
The species that stay lost are the mirror image. Narrow range. Small, cryptic,
nocturnal, or underground. And, the finding that matters most here, living
somewhere that is hard or dangerous to reach, so nobody has
searched. A species can remain "lost" for a century without any evidence that it
has declined at all. It can simply be that no qualified person has been to the
right ridge in the right month.
Their overall estimate is that roughly a quarter of lost species
are probably already extinct. Which is a bleak number read one way, and an
extraordinary one read the other: it implies that most of the species on this map
are still out there.
They also found that tetrapods are being lost faster than they are being
found again. Rediscovery is slowing for amphibians, birds and mammals,
while reptiles are being lost quickly. The gap is widening, and it will not be
closed by the kind of survey that finds large animals near roads.
Plenty do come back. Of the tetrapods Lindken and colleagues
traced, 424 of 1,280, a third of them, had already been found again by
the time they published. This page carries the ones still missing, so a rediscovery
is a species leaving it. The longest documented wait on record here is a
Sierra Leone freshwater crab, Afrithelphusa afzelii, refound
after 225 years. Recent finds are collected on the

What The Biodiversity Group does about it
The
Biodiversity Group works in the places the profile above predicts will be
overlooked: steep, wet, unglamorous forest, a long way from a field station,
looking for small animals at night. Three of those records are on this map.

Fugler's Shadow Snake
Emmochliophis fugleri
Known from a single specimen collected in 1966 and never seen again. On
7 March 2019, at the Río Manduriacu Reserve in Imbabura, The
Biodiversity Group's Scott Trageser and Ross Maynard found one: the second
individual of this species ever recorded, and the first photographed alive. The
rediscovery was published in 2021, 54 years after the first.
The paper recommends the species be listed Critically Endangered, because the
reserve where it was found is under imminent threat from mining. The IUCN still
lists it as Data Deficient, assessed in 2016 and not revisited
since it was found again.

A land snail found by a stranger online
Myxostoma petiverianum
The last published record was Dautzenberg and Fischer's, in 1905.
On 3 August 2014, on a citizen-science survey called Con Dao Land and
Sea, The
Biodiversity Group's Scott Trageser photographed a snail on Hòn Cau that
nobody present could name, and posted it to iNaturalist. That was the whole
method.
In November 2015 a malacologist in Malaysia, Junn Kitt Foon, came across the
photograph there and recognized the animal, the first ever taken of a live
adult. No expedition and no budget found this species. A picture
left somewhere public did, and one specialist who happened to scroll past it.

The Mindo Glassfrog
Nymphargus balionota
Seen once since 1984, a single male in 2005. In 2018 a Biodiversity
Group team was at Río Manduriacu surveying the Tandayapa Andes toad when
Scott Trageser, too ill to join the night survey, went to a stream near camp
instead and heard a frog he did not recognize calling for a mate.
Return surveys in 2019 found more in three separate streams, including the
first females ever recorded, plus metamorphs and egg masses. Not a survivor, then:
a breeding population.

One we have found and cannot name
There is a third. A species on lists like this one has been found again by The
Biodiversity Group, and it is not on the map above, because saying where it
is, or what it is, would put it at risk before protection is in place.
That caution is not theater. For a species reduced to one known site, a public
announcement is a map for collectors, and the trade in rare reptiles and
amphibians runs on exactly this kind of news. The record is documented, the
evidence is held, and it will be published when publishing it is safe.

The list is not a finished thing
Two open questions sit on it, and both need a taxonomist rather than a
spreadsheet. Fifteen names are treated by one authority as valid species and by
another as synonyms of something else. When a narrow endemic is absorbed
into a widespread species, it leaves conservation attention by clerical means
rather than by evidence. A further 149 were removed from the source list by IUCN
SSC specialists for reasons that were never recorded per species: some because
they had been found, some because nobody had ever looked. Those two reasons point
in opposite directions, and the difference is the whole argument.

Another list, counting something else
Recently Extinct Plants and Animals is the most thorough
catalog of its kind we know of, with 12,859 taxa, painstakingly sourced and with a
citation behind almost every entry. It is worth your time, and it is worth saying
exactly how it differs from this page, because the two look like the same subject
and are not.
Its rediscoveries section counts species that
disappeared from a country and were later refound there, such as a plant gone
from the British flora for ninety years, turning up on one roadside. This page
counts species missing from science, everywhere, at once. Both are real
losses and both matter; they are simply different questions.
The gap is measurable. We compared the two: of 1,063 species in their
rediscoveries listing, exactly one also appears among the 2,120
here: Amphilophus lyonsi, a Costa Rican cichlid, and it
has indeed been found again. That near-total absence is not a disagreement between
the lists. It is the two definitions doing their jobs.
